What is Assisted Living?

Assisted Living

Assisted living communities are one of the most popular senior living options for older adults who need additional support. The environment is designed to look more like an upscale apartment community, helping residents feel more like they are living in a private home instead of an institutional facility.

Assisted Living Services

A resident of an assisted living community typically requires assistance with medication management, bathing and dressing. These are just a few of the activities of daily living supported in this environment. Other services include:

    - Help with toileting and transferring
    - Transportation
    - Housekeeping and laundry
    - Meals are usually served restaurant-style in a dining room
    - A variety of life enrichment activities are offered every day

Benefits of an Assisted Living Community

For an older adult who may be feeling lonely and isolated at home or who may no longer be safe living alone, assisted living communities offer many benefits:

Security. The environment is designed to keep older adults safe and secure. Safety features range from emergency call systems in each apartment to fire detection systems, on-site staff around the clock, and medication management support.

Life Enrichment. Isolation and depression are unfortunately both common issues for older adults who live alone. The friendship and fellowship an assisted living community offers makes this level of care a popular choice for seniors and their families. Life enrichment activities are geared toward the abilities of older adults, ranging from physical exercise programs to art classes and group outings to local attractions.

Help Nearby. One challenge families all face when an elderly loved one lives alone is how to make sure they have help when they need it; whether it is the middle of the day or the middle of the night. Assisted living staff is on-site 24/7 and available when your loved one needs them.

Transportation. The majority of assisted living communities offer some form of transportation to help residents attend local events, enjoy shopping at area malls, and for physician visits.

Costs of Assisted Living

The cost of assisted living care ranges from $718 to $9,500 with the average being $3,450. An important factor for families to consider is that assisted living communities each include different services in their pricing. Some are a flat fee for all residents and others charge a basic rate with level of care charges based on services the resident requires.

Paying for Assisted Living Care

Assisted living is primarily paid for from private family funds. In some cases, an older adult may qualify for additional forms of assistance. Many states are now allocating Medicaid funding for assisted living care. If your loved one was a veteran or is the surviving spouse of a veteran, they may be eligible for the Veteran's Aid & Attendance benefit. Finally, if your aging family member has a long-term care insurance policy you should check to see if it can be used in an assisted living community. Many policies now cover in-home care and assisted living.
